Interim Leadership

Interim leadership can mean being ready for the unknown. Being able to step up and provide temporary support to enable an organisation to remain strong, despite the change they are working through. An opportunity to steady the ship, bring flexibility and stability whilst offering guidance, experience and support at a time of transition.

The remit may be about maintenance, redesign or growth.

The temporary nature enables boards to have the privilege of time. Time to make informed decisions with a fresh perspective as opposed to a rushed or forced decision which might not be in the best interests of the charity.
This might come around in a couple of different ways. For example:

-
If there is an anticipated leadership change, the board of directors have the ability to pause and reflect before deciding how to progress with future recruitment. This may require more time than leadership notice period allows. Bringing in an interim leader to support the organisation on a short term basis can ensure that the board are progressing with decision making for the organisation but removing the pressure of a short timescale.

-
This can also be an option if a leader is going to be off for a period of time such as a sabbatical, maternity/paternity/carer leave or ill health.
